Fires Spark At Ford Over New Escape and Fusion Recall
- Ennis & Ennis
12/04/2012 - Ford Motor Company will recall about 16,000 Fusion sedans and 73,320 Escape compact sport-utility vehicles due to reported overheating problems that could cause engine fires. All of the recalls involve 2013 models with “SE” and “SEL” packages equipped with a 1.6 liter, four-cylinder engine said the automaker and does not affect Fusion or Escape models with other engines. This recall, the fourth in four months, marks yet another hiccup in the promotion of the all-new Escape, a top seller for Ford in the competitive compact SUV market segment. Safety advocates indicate that more than three recalls in a car’s debut year are a sign of quality problems.
In September, the company recalled over 7,500 new Escapes to fix coolant leaks that can cause engines to overheat and catch fire. One theory is that plugs in the engine may not have been installed properly causing coolant to leak and engines to overheat. Those Escapes also had the 1.6-liter engine. In July, Ford recalled 11,500 Escapes to repair fuel lines that can crack, leak and cause fires. That same month, 10,000 Escapes were recalled due to defective carpet padding which interfered with braking.
Fusion and Escape owners can determine if they are affected by the recall by logging on to Ford’s website, www.ford.com and clicking the “View Notices and Recalls” in the “Support” tab. Owners should enter their 17-digit vehicle identification number to see if their numbers are included. Anyone interested can also contact Ford at (866) 436-7332.
Unfortunately for Ford, both the Escape and the Fusion have been two of its top-selling vehicles, selling over 400,000 of the vehicles in 2012, although not all are involved in this newest recall. Customers driving the effected vehicles should contact their dealers and arrange for free alternative transportation. Steve Kenner, director of Ford’s safety offices states, “We have identified an issue and are taking actions in the best interest of our customers. It is important that affected customers not ignore this recall and contact their dealer as soon as possible.”
