What is Accutane? Accutane is an oral drug developed by the LaRoche Company for treatment of the most severe forms of acne. Other names for Accutane are Roaccutane, Isotretinoin, Amnesteem, Claravis, and Soltret. Where other medications often fall short, Accutane is powerful enough to treat acne that can leave the patient permanently disfigured. However, because Accutane can also have dramatic side effects, certain strict precautions have been laid out for its use.
In October 2001, the FDA concluded LaRoche did not adequately communicate the dangers of using Accutane. Now Accutane has been linked to an increased occurrence of the following:
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
Crohn's Disease
Hepatoxicity
Ulcerative Colitis
Liver Damage
Kidney Damage
Under no circumstances should you discontinue taking any medication, including Accutane, without first consulting with your doctor.
