Drug At Center Of Local Trial Pulled From Market

06/29/2009 - The drug maker, Roche, has pulled the acne drug Accutane off the market because of jury verdicts regarding bowel disease.
The news comes as the drug's purported psychological effects are at the center of a defense argument in a local trial.
The defense for suspect, John Mullarkey, argues that Accutane put him in a psychotic state the night of the incident.
Mullarkey is accused in the deadly stabbing of 16-year-old, Gateway High School cheerleader Demi Cuccia in 2007.
Prosecutors presented a rebuttal witness Friday, a physician's assistant who treated Mullarkey. She testified that he never reported depression or any other psychological side effects while on Accutane.
Mullarkey's lawyer said that he is monitoring the story and assessing the impact Roche's decision to pull the drug may have on the case, and he plans to bring it up before closing arguments.
