07/03/2012 - On July 2, 2012, GlaxoSmithKline agreed to the largest-ever U.S. settlement involving healthcare fraud. GSK agreed to pay $3 billion to settle criminal and civil claims that it failed to provide regulators with information regarding the risk of congestive heart failure and heart attack associated with the diabetes drug Avandia. This settlement also includes resolution of the claim that GSK promoted Paxil for the treatment of depression in patients under the age of 18 through sales calls, spa programs, a “false and misleading” medical journal article and “lavish weekend conferences, even though it was only FDA approve for adult uses.
Lastly this settlement resolves the claim that GSK promoted Wellbutrin for unapproved uses including weight loss, sexual dysfunction and substance abuse. “While the settlement amount is high, it still appears to be a mere ‘slap on the wrist’ when you consider the total amount of money GSK made on these drugs.
