Boston Scientific scrutinized by Congress, DOJ for stents

-bizjournals.com

02/29/2008 - Boston Scientific Corp. is among companies under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice for improperly marketing biliary stents for non-approved uses, according to its annual report.

The Natick-based medical devices firm reports the Justice Department informed the company of its civil investigation into the allegations in December 2007. The firm said it intends to cooperate with the investigation, and it had not received a subpoena for documents related to the matter.

The medical devices firm markets the "Wallstent" biliary stent, designed to prop open the bile duct to allow bile to reach the duodenum during digestion, according to the company's website.

Separately, Boston Scientific said in its annual report that in February 2007 a U.S. congressional committee requested research and marketing information about its "Taxus" drug-eluting stents, which are used to keep arteries open after surgeries to clear clots. The committee told the company of its concern about the safety and non-approved use of the stents. The company said it is one of two firms that received such requests for data from Congress.

Boston Scientific reported a 2007 net loss of $495 million on revenue of $8.4 billion. The firm lists 28,600 employees worldwide.
