Pfizer Settles Celebrex, Bextra Lawsuits - At Cost of $894 Million
- Examiner.com
10/17/2008 - Pfizer for years has fought a battle over two of its prescription pain
relievers, Celebrex and Bextra. And the world's largest drugmaker finally is putting most of that battle to rest. New York-based Pfizer today said it has agreements in principle to end more than 90 percent of the personal injury lawsuits brought by people who claimed Celebrex and Bextra caused strokes, heart attacks, and other dangerous conditions. Pfizer said it will pay $894 million to settle the suits.
Bextra was pulled from the market in 2005. Today's settlement includes about 7,000 cases invovling that drug.
Pfizer wants to wrap up claims by the end of the year. The company's general counsel, Amy Schulman, told Associated Press the company will take on any remaining cases in court.
"I don't think either side has an interest in protracting this," Schulman said.
The Food and Drug Administration continues to allow the use of Celebrex, though it's the only COX-2 Inhibitor approved for use in the U.S.
