First Chantix Suicide Lawsuit Settles

- Ennis & Ennis News

10/31/2012 - In October 2012, Pfizer Inc. settled the first Chantix suicide product liability lawsuit.  The subject lawsuit alleged that Pfizer’s smoke cessation drug, Chantix, caused the Plaintiff to commit suicide.

This lawsuit was the first of over 2,500 Chantix lawsuits that was scheduled for trial in Alabama federal court.  These lawsuits allege that Pfizer failed to warn of the dangerous side effects associated with Chantix, including depression and suicidal actions.  Interestingly the settlement followed a recent Order wherein U.S. District Judge Inge Johnson required Pfizer’s Chief Executive Office, Ian Reed, and two other executives to testify in person for the scheduled trial.

In May 2006, the FDA approved Chantix as a smoking cessation drug.  In very little time, the FDA received a large volume of adverse events reports, such as aggressive behavior and suicidal actions associated with Chantix.

In November 2007, the FDA issued an Early Communication noting that it was evaluating post market adverse events reports involving Chantix aggressive behavior and Chantix suicidal behavior.

In February 2008, the FDA issued a Public Health Advisory regarding Chantix to alert health care providers and patients of new Chantix prescribing information to include warnings for depressed mood, unusual behaviors and suicidal attempts.

In July 2009 the FDA ordered a label change to include a black box warning on Chantix warning of the risk of change in behavior including hostility, agitation, depressed mood and suicidal thoughts or action.
