Children's Motrin Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) Lawsuit
Children's Motrin SJS: Children's Motrin is an ibuprofen based medication that has been associated with cases of Stevens Johnson Syndrome in children. Children's Motrin is an over the counter medication commonly given to relieve symptoms such as fever, body aches and pain associated with the common cold, flu and other childhood illnesses. Children's Motrin comes in liquid, chewable and tablet form and is recommended for children between the ages of 2 and 11. Children's Motrin has been available in the non-prescription form since 1995. Although adults and children are both affected by serious Motrin side effects such as Stevens Johnson Syndrome it appears that it is more commonly related to adolescent use of Motrin. There have been many reports of children or even infants being severely effected by SJS or one of the other skin disorders after a single Motrin dose. Although SJS and the other skin disorders may be treated before they become severe there have been several deaths reported as a result of untreated Stevens Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis. If you suspect that your child or a loved one may have SJS or any of the other associated skin disorders you should consult with your physician regarding your symptoms and the continuation of Children's Motrin.
Stevens Johnson Syndrome: Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) is a life-threatening condition affecting the skin in which cell death causes the epidermis to separate from the dermis. The syndrome is thought to be a hypersensitivity complex affecting the skin and the mucous membranes. Although the majority of cases are idiopathic, the main class of known causes is medications, followed by infections and (rarely) cancers.Read more about SJS >>>
Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis:
Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), also known as Lyell's syndrome, is a life-threatening dermatological condition that is frequently induced by a reaction to medications. It is characterized by the detachment of the top layer of skin (the epidermis) from the lower layers of the skin (the dermis) all over the body.Read more about Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis >>>
Symptoms Your Child May Experience: The condition often starts with vague symptoms of fever, sore throat, headache,
joint pains and gastro-enteritis. These symptoms can last from 1 to 14 days. A
widespread red rash then forms, which often (but not always) has typical spots
known as "target" lesions. These are concentric rings of different shades of red, which may blister in the center, and they are often clearly seen on the palms. Similar blistering lesions then form in the mucous membranes such as the mouth, the airway, the gastro-intestinal tract, the conjunctivae of the eye and the genital tract.
Potential symptoms of Stevens - Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are follows:
Rash, blisters, or red splotches on skin
Persistent fever
Blisters in mouth, eyes, ears, nose, and genital area
Swelling of eyelids and red eyes
Conjunctivitis
Flu-like symptoms
Recent history of having taken a prescription or over-the-counter medication
In some cases permanent eye damage or blindness can also occur.
