02/03/2012 - On January 16, 2012, a Covidien Duet TRS Universal Straight recall and a Covidien Articulating Single Use Loading Unit recall was issued after learning of 13 serious injuries and three fatalities associated with these devices. Covidien concluded that the device has the potential to injure adjacent anatomical structures within the thorax (chest) when used during thoracic surgery, which can result in life-threatening post-operative complications. “My concern here is that the recall is only reaching healthcare professionals and not the patients who may be the victims of this recall,” commented attorney David Ennis of Ennis & Ennis, P.A.

According to Covidien’s press release, the Duet TRS is a single-use loading unit with a fully integrated tissue reinforcement system to support staple lines in tissues. There were more than 500,000 units sold worldwide. Covidien believes approximately one-third of global procedures using the device are for thoracic indications. Covidien now contraindicates the use of the duet TRS for thoracic surgery, however, the devices will continue to be used for other indications.
