Depuy Metal On Metal Hip Implants

Sales of the DePuy ASR hip replacement have been suspended in the United States since many doctors have reported a substantially higher need for revisions and further hip surgery. There have also been numerous patient complaints of crippling pain they experienced following their implantation with this defective device. For more than two years there have been reports of the DePuy ASR Hip Implants failing in patients only a few years after implant, requiring costly and painful replacement operations.

In addition to a mounting number of DePuy ASR lawsuits filed in recent months over their recalled metal-on-metal hip replacement, DePuy Orthopaedics and Johnson & Johnson are now facing lawsuits over their DePuy Pinnacle metal-on-metal hip replacement, which also allegedly has design defects that may make it prone to early failure.

DePuy Hip Replacement Failure

Patients with the DePuy ASR ACETABULAR CUP revisions should contact us about their rights. DePuy was marketing the ASR hip cup under the brand name ASR (Articular Surface Replacement). The DePuy ASR System is a large diameter, metal-on-metal hip resurfacing device.

Numerous FDA reports of patients with loose DePuy ASR Acetabular Cups have been made by doctors after performing revision surgery.

The ASR hip cup revision reports also mention instances of loosening, pseudotumour and metallosis. Surgeons have noted upon revsion that the DePuy ASR hip cup was “loose and easy to revise” and “the cup popped right out. There was no evidence of any bony ingrowth.” This is in spite of the surgeon’s prerevision observation that “The patient was revised to address complaint of extreme pain when weight bearing. X-rays looked good, and cup was in position.”

DePuy ASR hip patients have been described as having ALVAL, aseptic lymphocyte dominated vasculitis associated lesion, adverse tissue reactions to metal particles and ions, and pseudotumour, a soft tissue mass that may be the result of a toxic reaction to an excess of particulate metal wear debris.

On March 9, 2010 DePuy announced that they were pulling the DePuy ASR Hip Replacement off of the U.S. market because the device appears to have a high failure rate. FDA Adverse Event Reports documents problems with the DePuy ASR cup such as the failure of the DePuy ASR to bond, and surgeons finding that the cup is loose during revision surgery.

We are at this time unaware of any DePuy ASR hip replacement class action lawsuits at this time but we are investigating DePuy ASR hip replacement lawsuits for patients who have had a revision of the ASR hip implant. Our defective medical device lawyers are experienced in handling hip replacement cases as well as other types of medical devices and are also currently taking cases for Zimmer Hip Implants as well as Stryker Hip Implants.

Depuy ASR Hip Replacement Recall Lawsuit

DePuy Company Release Letter

If you or a loved one have received a letter from DePuy Orthopaedics or Johnson & Johnson regarding your hip replacement surgery, it is important to contact an attorney to review your case first, before seeing a doctor or signing any documents, releases, or waivers from the company. For information about your legal options, please call 1.800.856.6405 or fill out a form on this page.

At this time, Johnson & Johnson and DePuy may be contacting patients who received the ASR hip replacement systems since 2003, offering to pay some medical expenses if patients sign a waiver of liability. However, signing the release letter may actually prevent victims from being able to seek compensation from the companies should complications arise in the future.

The compensation also may not cover expenses incurred after the surgery, such as diagnostic testing procedures (blood tests, x-rays, ultrasounds), lost wages, loss of earning capacity, pain, suffering, and future medical expenses.

By submitting the form on this page, you will be able to discuss your case with a hip implant attorney and review your legal rights.
