| PriCara recalls pain patches
-HaysPharma
01/04/2009- PriCara has recalled two batches of Duragesic pain-relief patches in the US after it was suspected that the gel contained in them may leak.
Lots of 50 of the 50mcg/hr patches, one sold by PriCara and the other by Sandoz, are being recalled with the cooperation of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
A defect in the manufacturing process meant fentanyl gel may be released from the reservoir into the pouch in which the patch is packaged, the company said.
The problem has since been corrected, it added, but warned anyone who finds a patch that is cut or damaged in any way not to use it.
Exposure to the gel can have extremely harmful effects, including respiratory depression and possible overdose, which could be fatal.
Anyone who has come into contact with the liquid should wash the affected area with large amounts of water only, the company says, as other agents may increase the drug's ability to go through the skin.
PriCara recently received FDA approval for its painkilller, Tapentadol
