Tendonitis, Ruptured Tendon, Torn Ligaments

Fluoroquinolones :
Fluoroquinolones are a type of antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. They have been linked to cases of tendonitis and ruptured tendons among other side effects. Fluoroquinolones can severely erode cartilage in joints and lead to tendonitis and ruptured tendons . These injuries usually require surgical repair and may even cause long term disabilities. The FDA's Dr. Renata Albrecht stated that studies have shown that fluoroquinolones can increase the risk of tendonitis and tendon rupture by as much as 400 percent.

FDA ANNOUNCES BLACK BOX WARNING:
In July of 2008, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that they will require antibiotic drugs known as fluoroquinolones to carry the black box warning, their most serious warning on their packaging.

There have been several reports to the FDA of tendon damage, and tendon rupture linked to the use of fluoroquinolone antibiotics. These reports have been accumulating since 1994. Common injuries reported are ruptures of the shoulder tendons, Achilles tendon, hand tendons, as well as other tendons.

More than 300 cases of tendon rupture, 250 cases of tendonitis, and 270 cases of other tendon damage linked to fluoroquinolone use have now been submitted to the FDA, and it is likely that many more cases have not yet been reported.
