Ford Recalling Vehicles For Electrical And Fuel Problems

- WSJ.com

03/03/2011 - Ford issued recall notices for 34,100 vehicles to fix possible problems with fuel-systems or electrical components that could cause fires resulting from fuel leaks or electrical short circuits.

One recall affects 25,000 Ranger pickup trucks from the 2010 model year (23,000 in the U.S., 2,000 in Canada). The vehicles were built from Oct. 15, 2009 through May 19, 2010. The car maker says the recall stems from potential leaks from a fuel line in the engine compartment. Ford says the fuel line is on the “cold side” of the engine, away from the hot exhaust manifold, so it would not result in fuel leaking onto hot surfaces during normal driving. Still, a fuel leak can lead to a fire if an ignition source is nearby.

The company says it expects to notify affected customers by mid-March and ask them to arrange to bring their vehicles to local dealers who will make the fix free of charge. Ford says it isn’t aware of any injuries resulting from the problem.

Ford is also recalling certain Ford F-150, F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, Edge, and Lincoln MKX vehicles built from Oct. 25, through Nov. 20, 2010. The recall affects 9,100 vehicles (8,000 in the U.S., 1,000 in Canada). The vehicles could have electrical parts called body control modules that could form short circuits due to contamination. A short circuit could result in a fire.

Under the recall the dealer will inspect the body control module and replace it if necessary. The service is free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on or about March 7.
