Man Discovers Used Car Was Recalled When It Explodes

10/17/2009 - When Mike Gerrin bought his 2002 Ford F-150, he had no idea that it had been recalled for a faulty part. That is, until the truck burst into flames.

It happened on October 7. Gerrin had just taken a quick trip out to pick up a sandwich. He was in his house eating, when he heard what he thought was fireworks. When he looked outside, he saw his truck was in flames.

His sister later discovered that his F-150 was involved a huge recall a few years back because a faulty switch caused some vehicles to catch fire. Officially, the cause of the fire of Gerrin's truck is unknown, but he believes it was likely caused by the switch. He didn't know about the recall because he bought the car used, and he didn't own it when the recall was issued.

You can find out online if the used vehicle you're interested in was eligible for a recall by plugging in the car's VIN number at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website. But if the car is on the recall list, you should call a dealer to see if it has been fixed. If the car is less than 10 years old, the dealer must correct the problem at no charge.

Gerrin is confident that he will be reimbursed for the value of his car. But he lost all of his hunting equipment in the fire, and that was not insured.
