Merck targeted over Fosamax in St. Clair County
- St.Claire Record
02/06/2012 - A Washington County woman is suing the makers of an osteoporosis medicine for allegedly making exaggerated claims about its benefits.
Susan Lange, on behalf of Vera Lange, filed a lawsuit Jan. 24 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Merck Sharp & Dohme Corporation.
According to the complaint, Vera Lange was prescribed the drug Fosamax by her doctor with the understanding that it would reduce the loss of bone density and the possibility of bone fractures. However, Lange alleges the drug does just the opposite, weakening the bones and increasing the risk of injury. Lange claims Merck Sharp & Dohme has concealed its knowledge of the of the risk of long-term use of bisphosphates contained in Fosamax, yet has continued to make and market the drug.
Lange accuses the drug manufacturer of negligence, fraud and breach of warranty. She is asking the company to pay more than $300,000 in damages, plus court fees, for allegedly making false claims.
