Wichita Teen Warning Against Gardasil
- Kansas CW
05/26/2009 - When a Wichita teenager found out about a vaccine that prevents cervical cancer, she asked her mom if she could get it. After receiving the three shots of Gardasil, she says she began fighting for her life.
"It's not curable but it's treatable. That's what they tell us," says Gabi Swank.
"We never put two and two together. She'd always been healthy, perfectly healthy," said Gabi's mom Shannon Schrag. But things started to go wrong at cheerleading practice.
"I looked over my shoulder to do my full and I tore the muscle. Just by looking over my shoulder," said Swank. Seizures followed, then the fatal diagnosis cerebral vasculitis.
"I have accepted that it's happened to me. I'm not fine with it but I've got past anger and depression." Swank's now focused on telling her story in hopes others will rethink the vaccine. "I think girls are being used a guinea pigs. I'm not going to watch other people go through the same thing."
Her mom says after seeing her daughter's pain, cancer would be easier. "I know it's horrible to say you'd wish that on your child. But if we could go back and change it, I would take my chances with cervical cancer any day," Schrag said. She says it's more treatable than the side effects left behind by the vaccine.
Schrag says Gardasil denies the vaccine caused her daughter's disease. But her doctor stands behind the diagnosis. 9,000 women say the vaccine also made them sick. The National Vaccine Information Center is collecting signatures to try and get congress to hold a hearing on Gardasil.
The treatments for her autoimmune disease are expensive. She has insurance but it doesn't cover everything. Since last June she's racked up $60,000 in medical bills. Saturday her friends hosted a benefit dinner Saturday to try and help. They raised $3,600.
