09/02/2008- According to a new study, young Australian women who received the cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil were more likely to have an allergic reaction.
The study was carried out by a team of Australian researchers. The team, led by Dr. Julia Brotherton of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, looked at over 100,000 young women.
All of the young women in the study were vaccinated with Gardasil in 2007.
Overall, they found that 8 young women who received the vaccination had an anaphylactic reaction, a rare but severe allergic reaction.
This allergic reaction can result in causing difficulty breathing, nausea, and rashes.
The infection rate was at 2.6 per 100,000 doses, which is far higher than the usual rate of 0.1 per 100,000 doses in other vaccination programs.
The study was reported on in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
