Weight Loss Drug Recall: A popular weight loss drug has been recalled after users report major health problems. At least one person has died.

05/05/2009 - The popular weight loss drug Hydroxycut has been pulled from the shelves.
Government health officials warn dieters using the supplement to stop after the FDA received 23 reports of liver problems including the death of a 19 year old male who used Hydroxycut.
Doctors at Baystate say 1 million doses of the product were sold in the United States last year which means 1 in 300 people are taking the drug.
Director of Weight Loss Surgery John Romanelli said, "It's over the counter, is relatively inexpensive, for the most part safe and may help people. So yes, lots of people take over the counter supplements to try to loose weight."
Hydroxycut works as an appetite suppressant. The main component is called "hydroxy citric acid" and comes from a fruit in Indonesia where it was used locally for just that.
Romanelli said, "That's the danger with these kinds of supplements, they don't undergo the rigorous study that prescription drugs do prior to their release to the market. So a lot of times we don't know what the side affects are until people report problems."
Doctors say the reason for that may be because many people don't consider supplements medication.
Romanelli said, "When you go to the doctor and they ask you what medicines are you on, things like garlic, things like co enzyme Q10, things like Hydroxycut are not prescription drugs but they are medications."
Doctors are advising those who have taken Hydroxycut to contact their doctors immediately. Get your liver checked out and if there are no signs of any damage you should still stop taking the supplement. If you or a loved one have been injured or suffered a loss as a result of Hydroxycut use you may be entitled to compensation.
