What is Kenolog?

Kenalog intra-articular - Kenalog intramuscular injection contains the active ingredient triamcinolone, a type of medicine known as a corticosteroid. Corticosteroids are hormones that are produced naturally by the adrenal glands. Corticosteroids have many important functions in the body, including control of inflammatory responses. Corticosteroid medicications are man-made derivatives of the natural hormones. They are often simply called steroids, but it should be noted that they are very different from another group of steroids, called anabolic steroids, which have gained notoriety because of their abuse by some athletes and body builders.

Triamcinolone - Kenalog injection is a synthetic steroid that has an anti-inflammatory effect. It is used to decrease inflammation in various different diseases and conditions.

Triamcinolone - Kenalog injections decreases inflammation by acting within cells to prevent the release of certain chemicals that are important in the immune system. These chemicals are normally involved in producing immune and allergic responses. By decreasing the release of these chemicals in a particular area, inflammation is reduced.

Triamcinolone - Kenalog injection also decreases the numbers of white blood cells circulating in the blood. This, along with the decrease in inflammatory chemicals, can be useful for the treatment of certain types of leukaemia, where there is an abnormally large production of certain white blood cells, and for treating certain diseases that are caused by the immune system attacking tissues in the body (autoimmune diseases).

Corticosteroids have many important functions on every organ system. If the body's natural level of steroid hormones is too low because the adrenal glands are not producing enough hormones, this must be treated with replacement therapy to allow the body to function normally. Triamcinolone - Kenalog injections can also be used for this purpose.

Kenalog injection is given by injection into the muscle of the buttock in situations where a lasting corticosteroid effect is needed. The Triamcinolone - Kenalog injection is slowly absorbed into the bloodstream from this area, so one Kenalog injection produces an effect for about three weeks.

Kenalog injection can also be injected directly into inflamed soft tissue, for example in tennis elbow, or directly into a joint (intra-articular), for example in arthritis, to decrease inflammation and pain in that particular localised area, and increase mobility of the affected joint.

Serious Side Effects of Kenolog Injections - Triamcinolone Injections

Bristol-Myers Squibb issued a public safety alert and changed the label of the Kenalog injection to indicate that use of it in epidurals has been linked with “serious medical events, including death” and that use of it as an epidural injection was “not recommended.”

According to reports Doctors are still injecting the steroid in a way the company warns they shouldn’t, following reports that patients have died or become paralyzed after receiving Kenalog Injections.

The company will not go so far as to say the Kenalog injection was responsible for those deaths or injuries and the Food and Drug Administration failed to issue its own alert when Bristol-Myers Squibb changed the labels on Kenalog Injections.

Used for neck and back pain, Kenalog Injection and the Pfizer Inc. (PFE) drug Depo-Medrol Injection are the most frequently administered steroids in epidural injections. Over eight million such shots were given in the U.S. in 2010.

Bloomberg reports that experts believe this warning from the drug company has largely gone ignored or unnoticed.
