Maytag Refrigerator Fire Recall:
On March 10, 2009 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission in conjunction with Maytag Incorporated based in Newton, Iowa issued a voluntary recall on 1.6 million refrigerators due to a fire hazard. The recall includes the following brands also made by Maytag: Jenn-Air, Amana, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa by Maytag and Crosley. Then in August of 2009 the recall was expanded after an additiional 23 reports of fires and 4 reports of property damage due to fire.

The recall notice said an electrical failure in the relay component that turns on the refrigerator's compressor can cause overheating and pose a serious fire hazard.

Maytag, a unit of Whirlpool Corp., said they have received 41 reports of refrigerator relay ignition, including 16 reports of property damage ranging from smoke damage to extensive kitchen damage.

Serial numbers must end with: AA, AC, AE, AG, AJ, AL, AN, AP, AR, AT, AV, AX, CA, CC, CE, CG, CJ, CL, CN, CP ,YY, YZ, ZB, ZD, ZF, ZH, ZK, ZM, ZQ, ZS, ZU, ZW, ZY and ZZ, and model numbers beginning with ARS, CS, JC, JS, MS, MZ and PS.

Top-Freezer Refrigerator Models Recalled.

Serial numbers must end with: AA, AC, AE, AG, AJ, AL, AN, AP, AR, AT, AV, AX, CA, CC, CE, CG, ZB, ZD, ZF, ZH, ZK, ZM, ZQ, ZS, ZU, ZW, ZY and ZZ, and model numbers beginning with AT, CT, MT and PT.

These refrigerators were purchased in stores and by homebuilders across the US from January 2001 through January 2004.

Bottom Freezer Refrigerator Models are NOT recalled.

The model and serial number tag can be found in the refrigerator section of the refrigerator.
