Medtronic Altered Studies Regarding its InFuse Bone Graft Products
- Ennis & Ennis News
10/25/2012 - According to the United States Senate Finance Committee, executives of Medtronic, a medical device manufacturer, edited product studies, which had been performed by outside researchers to portray their product as superior to other competing products. Additionally, the Senate committee also noted that internal Medtronic documents showed that it inserted language into reports claiming that its InFuse product was superior to a bone graft as well. This fraudulent conduct came to light after the release of a report published in The Spine Journal, wherein a group of spine specialist publicly challenged the Medtronic studies claiming they had understated serious side effects associated with InFuse.
Further, the Senate Finance inquiry found that Medtronic had paid approximately $210 million dollars in fees, royalties and other payments to doctors participating in outside research on InFuse. InFuse treatments use a bioengineered protein matter that is then inserted into an LT-cage to stimulate bone growth after fusion surgery to alleviate back pain. Many critics of InFuse claim that Medtronic has always overplayed the benefits and downplayed the risks when marketing the InFuse products. The product was approved in 2002 for anterior lumbar approach fusion surgeries. Unfortunately, the product is used during off label surgeries nearly 85% of the time in procedures not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. These surgeries include multiple level lumbar surgeries performed posteriorly and the more dangerous use, insertion into the cervical spine.
