Kuklo-Medtronic timeline gets messier with new details

-MinnPost

07/16/2009 - The Dr. Kuklo-Medtronic timeline got a little messier last night with new disclosures reported by the New York Times and Wall Street Journal.

Dr. Timothy Kuklo, a former military surgeon, is under fire for allegedly falsifying data in a study of Medtronic's bone-growth product Infuse. Since the New York Times broke the story in May, the company has repeatedly said it wasn't aware of the study and didn't support it.

Newly public documents, however, show that Medtronic was financing a second, separate study, which, like the disputed study, also reviewed data of combat-related leg injuries at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Kuklo's former employer.

Also reported last night: Kuklo's current employer, Washington University, said in a letter to Sen. Charles Grassley that the doctor didn't disclose his Medtronic consulting agreement until a year after he was hired. The school's medical dean said the failure is "of great concern."

Medtronic says it has cut ties with Dr. Kuklo, but the company paid him about $850,000 in consulting and other fees between 2001 and 2009.
