Methylprednisolone Acetate Recall - Fungal Meningitis Lawsuit

Methylprednisolone Acetate Recalled Due to Meningitis Outbreak
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced in October 2012 that a non-contagious, fungal form of meningitis has sickened several people in nine states, killing seven. A total of 91 cases have been reported to the CDC from these states.
FDA officials identified that the tainted vials all came frome a New England based Compounding Center who supplies hospitals and clinics with the vials.
A voluntary recall of three lots of Methylprednisolone Acetate 80mg/mL vials has been issued and the manufacturer has stopped production of the product. The recalled lot numbers of tainted steroid vials are:

- #08102012@51
Three pain treatment centers in Tennessee received the steroids that were part of the three recalled lots:
- Specialty Surgery Center in Crossville, Tennessee
- PCA Pain Care Center in Oak Ridge
- St. Thomas Outpatient Neurosurgery Center in Nashville
All of those infected with meningitis had received Methylprednisolone Acetate injections to the spine.
What is Meningitis?
The Center for Disease Control defines meningitis as a disease caused by the inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord known as the meninges. The inflammation is usually caused by an infection of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
Meningitis may develop in response to a number of causes, usually bacteria or viruses, but meningitis can also be caused by physical injury, cancer or certain drugs.
Symptoms can vary depending on the cause of meningitis. In this case symptoms would include:
- headaches that worsen or become severe
- nausea
- dizziness
- fever
- slurred speech
- urinary retention
- weakness
- sensory deficit
- unsteady gait
