Methylprednisolone Acetate Recalled Due to Meningitis Outbreak

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced in October 2012 that a non-contagious, fungal form of meningitis has sickened several people in nine states, killing seven. A total of 91 cases have been reported to the CDC from these states.

FDA officials identified that the tainted vials all came frome a New England based Compounding Center who supplies hospitals and clinics with the vials.

A voluntary recall of three lots of Methylprednisolone Acetate 80mg/mL vials has been issued and the manufacturer has stopped production of the product. The recalled lot numbers of tainted steroid vials are:

  • #05212012@68
  • #06292012@26
  • #08102012@51

Three pain treatment centers in Tennessee received the steroids that were part of the three recalled lots:

  • Specialty Surgery Center in Crossville, Tennessee
  • PCA Pain Care Center in Oak Ridge
  • St. Thomas Outpatient Neurosurgery Center in Nashville

All of those infected with meningitis had received Methylprednisolone Acetate injections to the spine.
