Peanut Butter Salmonella Lawsuit: King Nut Recall: PCA Recall: Peanut Butter Products Recalled:

Peanut Butter Products Recall

Peanut Butter Recall :
On January 10, 2009 the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in conjunction with King Nut Companies & Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) initiated a nationwide recall of peanut butter distributed under the King Nut label. The King Nut Peanut Butter Recall has been initiated because it has recently been linked to an outbreak of salmonella food poisoning. Several companies that use peanut butter products manufactured by PCA and distributed by King Nut have also recalled many of their products.

A combination of epidemiological analysis and laboratory testing by state officials in Minnesota and Connecticut, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have enabled the FDA to confirm that the sources of the outbreak of illnesses caused by Salmonella Typhimurium are peanut butter and peanut paste produced by the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) at its Blakely, Georgia processing plant.

PCA peanut butter is used mostly in institutional settings, such as nursing homes and schools, under the King Nut and Parnell’s Pride labels. Other PCA peanut products were purchased by food companies and used to manufacture their private label products, including Kellogg’s Austin and Keebler brand peanut butter crackers. Companies that have used peanut butter products from PCA have recalled several of their product including snack crackers, candy, cakes, ice cream, cereal, energy bars, cookie dough, and pet foods.

In its Salmonella outbreak investigation, the FDA reported that on as many as 12 occasions PCA shipped product known to be contaminated with Salmonella to other food manufacturers, and that the company failed to provide a process that would prevent contamination of its peanut products both during and after manufacturing.

Products Recalled:
Companies nationwide that received product made by PCA have issued voluntary recalls of their products.  As FDA gathers additional information about these products, the list of recalled products is expected to expand.  FDA has created a searchable database for these products, which can be found at http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/peanutbutterrecall/index.cfm The list is updated frequently. Major national brands of jarred peanut butter found in grocery stores are not affected by the PCA recall.

Symptoms of Salmonella Food Poisoning:
Symptoms of Salmonella infection may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, and joint pain. Symptoms usually appear within 12-72 hours after the ingestion of contaminated food.

Reported Cases:
The CDC has received reports of six deaths and 107 hospitalizations among the 486 people sickened in 43 U.S. states and one Canadian province.
For the latest information on the outbreak and the epidemiological investigation, including number of illnesses and a list of states reporting illnesses, go to the CDC web page at http://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/typhimurium/ .
