06/21/2012 - According to the QuarterWatch, a monitoring program run by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, reports of serious adverse events have been on the rise since 2010. In 2011 there were 179,855 reports of serious or fatal adverse drug reactions, which is a 9.4% increase from 2010. The ten drugs with the most reports of adverse events were Pradaxa, Coumadin, Levaquin, Carboplatin, Zestril, Cisplatin, Zocor, Cymbalta, Cipro, and Bactrim.
Pradaxa was the leader of the pack with 3,781 adverse reports. 542 of these reports were death and another 644 were reports of strokes suffered as a result of using Pradaxa. With Coumadin coming in with the second highest number of adverse event reports, the FDA has solidified that anticoagulants are very high-risk drugs. These reports of events are either submitted by drug manufacturers or reported by patients or their physicians. With an estimated 2 to 4 million reports of serious or fatal adverse events in 2011 the FDA is keeping a close on watch on many drug therapies and it was noted that only 2 of the drugs with the highest number of negative reports were introduced into the market in the past decade leaving the FDA on alert to continue monitoring the long term effects of many therapies.
