Toyota tells dealers to tie down floor mats
-Automotive News
10/08/2009 - Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. is instructing dealers to attach floor mats to seat frames on the driver’s side of select vehicles with self-locking wire ties to prevent the mats from snagging on gas pedals and causing unintended acceleration.
“We have reviewed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration what we’re calling a semipermanent floor mat installation process, and we’re providing these instructions to our dealers,” Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons says.
“This allows dealers to continue selling and delivering both new and used vehicles.”
Toyota is recalling 3.8 million Toyota and Lexus models to secure the mats. The recall is prompted by an accident in August during which four people were killed in a Lexus. A floor mat catching on the accelerator may have caused the crash.
Toyota Motor Sales began sending out instructions about the fix to its regional sales offices on Thursday, Oct. 1, Lyons says. He says regional personnel began disseminating the information to dealers the next day.
“I would expect that all dealers have that information and have started making the modifications,” Lyons says.
He says the mats are to be secured to the driver’s seat frame with nylon self-locking wire ties, described as plastic straps that loop back into themselves and lock when pulled tight.
Dealers also are to attach a label to the wire tie warning dealers and customers to ensure that the mat is secured with restraining straps and not to stack one mat over another.
Lyons says the company is also cautioning dealers about practices involving floor mats such as putting the wrong mats in vehicles and flipping mats over.
Toyota vehicles involved are 2007-10 Camrys, 2005-10 Avalons, 2004-09 Priuses, 2005-10 Tacomas and 2007-10 Tundras. Lexus models involved are 2007-10 ES 350s and 2006-10 IS 250s and IS 350s.
