07/05/2011 - Recent studies have been carried out on the birth control treatment known by the brands Yasmin or Yaz, results were released in the British Log of Medicine in Apr 2011. Both studies looked at groups of women in between 15 and 46 who were taking birth control pills containing drospirenone as well as levonorgestrel. According to the studies, users of the birth control medications made up of drospirenone (such as Yasmin or Yaz) provide an increased risk with regard to developing blood clots, called venous thromboembolism (VTE). In fact, the research said that although the risks regarding developing VTE from using mouth contraceptives is low, women taking drospirenone-based tablets were two to three times more at risk of establishing the dangerous blood clots then women taking levonorgestrel-based tablets.

FDA Investigating Challenges

There have been previous studies conducted on birth control pills containing drospirenone, six in total as reported by NPR media. The results of these research is at issue and raising red flags to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Four with the six studies have experienced similar findings regarding the increased risk of VTE in women using drospirenone-based birth control tablets. However, two of the particular studies have not revealed an increased risk. In response to the conflicting final results, a safety alert may be issued on the mouth contraceptive medication with the FDA.

The safety alert aimed at these types of birth control method medications indicated that the FDA will be evaluating the study results to establish the level of risk for you to consumers. The Food has not issued a new ban on these medications nor could they be advising women for you to discontinue their use. The alert is suggesting that women that are taking Yasmin, Yaz or a common form of the prescription medication (such as Beyaz, Zarah, Syeda, Safyral, Ocella, Loryna and Gianvi) speak to their doctor regarding using or discontinuing using the birth control supplements. The FDA additionally recommends that any kind of women currently taking birth control pills that contain drospirenone be aware of the signs of venous thromboembolism and see a doctor right away if any of the symptoms are present.

As a result of case study findings on increased risk of VTE in women using oral contraceptives, the actual FDA will be conducting their own study around the risks and is likely to release their studies this summer.

Why is VTE Dangerous and What are the Signs or symptoms?
