04/12/2010 - Bayer HealthCare announced on Friday its recent move of labeling its contraceptive pills Yaz and Yasmin with added information on the risks of blood clots, aiming to avoid controversies and raise transparency.
The company has taken the step forward in the direction under the recommendations of the Food and Drug Administration, following the trend like other oral contraceptives.
The statements labeled on the contraceptive packs have been utilized after the completion of two multiyear studies on more than 120,000 women consuming contraceptive pills in the U. S. and the U. K.
Yaz and Yasmin both contain a combination of drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol which are the derivatives of naturally secreted female hormones. The two drugs were the top selling pharmaceuticals in Germany last year yielding combined sales of $1.64 billion.
The recent move of the company has been taken up in the wake of 1,100 lawsuits being filed against it alleging Yaz’s consumption to be resulting in fatal blood clots.
A number of cases have been merged into federal multi-district litigation in the in Illinois.
