An FDA-funded Study Reveals Drospirenone-Containing Birth Control Pills Increase Risk of Blood Clots
- Ennis & Ennis
10/22/2012 - A recent study showed a 77% increased risk of venous thromboembolic events and a double risk for arterial thrombotic events with the use of drospirenone-containing birth control pills, such as Yaz and Yasmin, when compared with the risk of four low dose estrogen birth control pills. Interestingly, this study was led by the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research and funded by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. [1]
Drospirenone is the synthetic form of progesterone, a female hormone, used in certain birth control pills. The drospirenone-containing birth control pills are considered the “newer generation” birth control pills when compared with “older generation” birth control pills containing levonorgestrel.
This isn’t the first study with these findings. In October and November 2011, three studies were released within two weeks of each other confirming the increased risk of dangerous side effects with birth control pills containing drospirenone.
In fact in September 2011 after the FDA performed a preliminary review of the results of this study, it issued a Safety Communication indicating that it was concerned about increased risk of blood clots posed by drospirenone-containing birth control pills. Then in April 2012 the FDA required a label change on Yaz and Yasmin to include the increased risk for dangerous blood clots.
Attorney Holly Ennis of Ennis & Ennis, P.A. commented, “There are so many birth control options available to women these days, that it is not necessary for women to take drospirenone-containing oral contraception that carry the dangerous risk of potentially fatal blood clots. Women really should discuss all birth control pill options with their physicians before making their final decision.”
