02/11/2010 -Yaz and Yasmin Lawsuits have been filed in Indianapolis against Bayer Pharmaceuticals.
Women across the country claim that the birth control pills Yaz and Yasmin caused serious health effects.
One of those women is Gina Miller, the chief financial officer at a downtown Indianapolis company.
She's a wife and mother of three young children, and as if all that weren't enough to keep her busy, she also runs up to 35 miles a week.
To maintain this schedule, you have to be pretty healthy, and Miller was until she began taking Yaz, a contraceptive.
"My first symptoms were that my back was hurting," said Miller.
She was misdiagnosed with pneumonia, treated, and began running again. But she was not well.
"My running was a struggle. I was fatigued and short of breath. I just didn't feel like myself."
Months later, she suffered another episode much like the first. And like the first time, her severe pain required hospitalization.
She was diagnosed with multiple pulmonary embolisms - blood clots in her lungs. The condition resulted in the loss of lung capacity.
Miller has joined a Yaz class action lawsuit against Bayer Pharmaceuticals, the makers of Yaz and Yasmin.
Plaintiffs' lawyers argue the commercials for the drugs feature young women, target young women, and the drugs harm young women. According to the lawsuit, some of those suffering serious health effects are as young as 17 years old.
"They have suffered everything from strokes, to pulmonary embolism, gall bladder illness and removal," said an attorney representing the plaintiffs.
He says all were healthy before taking the drugs. As for Miller, she still has to take blood thinners, but she's feeling better and running again.
"I will be completely fine. But for a lot of women, they weren't so lucky," said Miller.
24-Hour News 8 contacted Bayer. Rose Talarico, the company's deputy director of external product communications sent a statement defending Yaz and Yasmin saying "…the complaints we have reviewed so far pertain to side effects that are warned about in the labeling of all oral contraceptives, including ours."
