11/09/2012 - Zimmer, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of hip replacement parts, is expected to pay over $615 million dollars to settle hip replacement lawsuits stemming from its recalled Durom metal-on-metal acetabular hip components. In 2008, Zimmer recalled the hip devices for approximately one month while it investigated reports of unusually high hip replacement revision rates. Zimmer’s latest earnings release, shows that Zimmer has already accrued estimated losses totaling nearly $388 million for Durom Cup-related claims and anticipates another $229.7 million remaining liability.
In April 2008, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Lawrence Dorr, complained of problems with the Durom cup. He noted that of 165 Zimmer cup revisions he performed, 14 were revised or required revision within the first two years following surgery. Dr. Dorr opined that the cup was defective; its fixations surface was problematic and a circular cutting surface on the periphery of the cup prevented it from fully seating.
Additionally, the US Drug Watchdog, a private consumer advocacy group is adding Zimmer Durom Cup and other metal on metal hip replacement devices to their ongoing initiative to identify all recipients of a failed metal on metal hip replacement implants. The group reports that there are over 500,000 US citizens with these potentially defective and dangerous hip replacement products. Cases against Zimmer are currently pending in the federal District Court in New Jersey, MDL NO. 2158 (SDW).
