Zithromax (Azithromycin) Z-Pak Side Effects Lawsuit

The Attorneys of Ennis & Ennis, P.A. are currently pursuing potential lawsuits for individuals who have experienced serious Zithromax side effects.

Zithromax (Azithromycin) serious side effects may include:

  • Cardiovascular Side Effects
  • Death
  • Liver Failure
  • Pyloric Stenosis
  • Sudden Cardiac Related Death
  • Zithromax child death

Zithromax, also know as Z-Pak, is an antibiotic that is a commonly prescribed for treatment of respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, tonsillitis and other bacterial infections. Zithromax is also commonly prescribed to treat ear infection, pneumonia, tonsillitis, and strep throat in patients under the age of 18.

Zithromax Liver Failure / Liver Damage

Zithromax is a powerful antibiotic that is eliminated from the body through the liver. This highly increases the risk for liver damage and liver failure especially in certain individuals.

Zithromax has increasingly been linked to serious cases of liver damage and liver failure. Reports of Zithromax induced liver failure began to surface as early as 1996, just one year after it was approved by the FDA. However, it wasn’t until 2000 that Pfizer warned the public of this serious side effect after the FDA forced them to do so.

In 2001 warning labels on Zithromax were updated to warn of these risks.

Symptoms of Zithromax Liver Damage May Include

  • Jaundice (yellowing of eyes and skin)
  • Dark Urine
  • Elevated Liver Enzymes
  • Fatigue
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Once liver damage has occurred it is not reversible.

Zithromax (Z-Pak) Cardiovascular Death Risk

Zithromax is in a class of antibacterial medications known as macrolides, which have been known to cause abnormal heart rhythm problems.

In 2011, the FDA reviewed Zithromax and other macrolides for links to abnormal heart rhythms, including QT interval prolongation.

Following the FDA investigation, warning labels for Zithromax were updated, along with all macrolides, to advise patients and doctors of potential heart rhythm problems.

Most recently, a study, published May 17, 2012 in the New England Journal of Medicine, found patients prescribed Zithromax (Z-Pak) were more likely to die than those prescribed amoxicillin, another antibiotic. The results were especially pronounced for those who died of heart attacks, strokes, sudden cardiac death and other cardiovascular causes.
