What is Zocor?

Zocor - Simvistatin s used together with lifestyle changes (diet, weight-loss, exercise) to reduce the amount of fatty substances such as low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol ('bad cholesterol') and triglycerides in the blood and to increase the amount of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (good cholesterol) in the blood. Simvastatin may also be used to decrease the amount of cholesterol and other fatty substances in the blood in children and teenagers 10-17 years of age who have familial heterozygous hypercholesterolemia (an inherited condition in which cholesterol cannot be removed from the body normally). Simvastatin is also used to decrease the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and death, and to decrease the need for surgery to improve blood flow in people who have medical conditions that put them at high risk of developing heart and blood vessel problems. Simvastatin is in a class of medications called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins). It works by slowing the production of cholesterol in the body so that the cholesterol cannot buildup on the walls of the arteries and block blood flow to the heart, brain, and other parts of the body.

Zocor Rhabdomyolysis Lawsuit

The FDA released a Zocor rhabdomyolysis warning on March 19, 2010 as part of an ongoing investigation into the side effects of Zocor and other cholesterol medications that belong to a family of drugs known as statins. All statins have been found to carry a risk of muscle injury, known as myopathy, and rhabdomyolysis is the most severe form, potentially causing severe kidney damage, kidney failure and death.

All statins currently contain a warning that myopathy and rhabdomyolysis are rare possible side effects, however this is the first time the FDA has warned that the conditions may be dose specific.

On June 8, 2011 the FDA indicated that new warnings will be added to the label for choleterol-lowering medications containing simvastating, indicating that 80 milligram dose has been associated with an increased risk of muscle injury or myopathy, especially during the first year of use. The medication is most commonly known as Zocor, but is also available as generic simvastatin. It is also used in combination with other drugs in the medications Vytorin and Simcor.

Doctors have been warned not to start new patients on 80 mg Zocor (simvastatin) prescriptions and to only use this highest dose among patients who have been taking 80mg Zocor for at least 12 months and have not experienced any muscle problems. The agency also added new contraindications and dose limitations when simvastatin is taken with certain other medications.

Symptoms of Zocor rhabdomyolysis or muscle problems may include:

  • Muscle Cramps
  • Muscle Stiffness
  • Muscle Spasms
  • Muscle Tenderness
  • Muscle Pain

In addition to Rhabdomyolysis Zocor Kidney Failure and Zocor Myelopathy have also been reported as possible Zocor side effects.
